Chapel of St. Joseph and St. Mary
This was the top floor of Jock Spence's home, circa 1900. It was moved to its current site in 1961 and was altered to become a chapel for the resident Sisters. The Chapel was named Chapel of St. Mary and St. Joseph and was dedicated by Bishop Minnis on August 22, 1961. This small gem on the banks of Bear Creek is open to all members of our parish. It is available and suitable for small weddings and memorial services.
Canon Douglas’ old pump organ is still on display. All the appointments in the Chapel are virtually the same as when the Sisters of St. Mary’s ran the retreat house during their summer breaks (1907 to 1987). The white stone altar, carvings of the different order of monks on the pews, the St. Joseph-the-Traveler carved figure in the entry and the crucifix over the altar… all given to the Sisters by Canon Douglas from his private Chapel at Camp Neosho (now Hiwan Homestead Museum). The free standing altar table was crafted by Jock Spence for the Sisters first Chapel in St. Mark’s (circa 1907).
Part of the space has been converted to become two private residences.
